Repair or Replace? Signs It’s Time for a New Refrigerator

A malfunctioning refrigerator can quickly lead to spoiled groceries and a major headache. When your fridge stops keeping food cold, you’re left with a tough choice: Is it better to repair your refrigerator or replace it entirely?

At Metropolitan Appliance, we know that buying a new appliance is an investment and sometimes, a quick fix is all you really need. That’s why we partner with Sir Visser Appliance Repair to give Seattle & Bellevue area homeowners an expert recommendation before making a decision.

Fridge Not Cooling

The Culprit: Dusty condenser coils, a frosted-over defrost drain, or a failing evaporator fan motor.

Quick Troubleshooting Check: Unplug the unit and clean dust off the condenser coils behind or underneath the fridge. Verify interior air vents aren’t blocked by food containers.

🔧 Repair If: The fridge is under 8-10 years old and the underlying issue is a simple fan motor replacement, sensor fix, or routine coil cleaning.

🚀 Replace If: The sealed system or compressor fails, or the fridge is over 10-12 years old (a compressor replacement can cost almost as much as a new energy-efficient unit).

Refrigerator Leaking Water on the Floor

The Culprit: Clogged or frozen defrost drain line, damaged door gasket, or leaking water supply line.

Quick Troubleshooting Check: Flush warm water down the defrost drain hole (located at the back of the freezer) to clear ice blockages. Check the rubber door seals for tears or gaps.

🔧 Repair If: Clear drain tubes or broken door gaskets can be cheaply unblocked or swapped out.

🚀 Replace If: The cabinet shell has internal rust/structural corrosion, or multiple water line leaks have damaged internal wiring harness areas.

Ice Maker Not Working or Not Dispensing Ice

The Culprit: Clogged water line, faulty water inlet valve, dirty water filter, or jammed ejector gear.

Quick Troubleshooting Check: Ensure the wire shutoff arm is down. Replace the water filter if it hasn’t been changed in over 6 months, and check the line behind the fridge for kinks.

🔧 Repair If: Replacing the water filter, unfreezing a line, or swapping out an in-line water valve solves the problem.

🚀 Replace If: The entire ice maker assembly along with the internal control panel/board is failing on an older unit, or the cost of parts approaches half the price of a replacement fridge.

Loud Buzzing, Humming, or Rattling Noise

The Culprit: Failing evaporator fan, worn-out condenser fan, or an overheating compressor.

Quick Troubleshooting Check: Open the freezer door; if the noise stops when opened, it is likely the evaporator fan blade hitting ice. Check if the unit is level on the floor to rule out base vibrations.

🔧 Repair If: The issue is a loose fan blade, worn fan motor, or misaligned leveling legs.

🚀 Replace If: The loud knocking noise is coming directly from the sealed compressor casing, signaling total internal mechanical failure on an aging unit.

Freezer Is Cold, But Fridge Is Warm

The Culprit: Stuck air damper control, failed defrost heater unit, or malfunctioning defrost thermostat.

Quick Troubleshooting Check: Unplug the unit to manual-defrost for 24 hours to clear frosted vents, then plug back in to see if cold air circulates to the lower compartment.

🔧 Repair If: The failure is isolated to individual electrical components like the defrost timer, thermistor, or damper control switch.

🚀 Replace If: Repeated defrost system repairs fail due to main logic board failure on a model that is past its warranty window.
